Volunteering at EHF Men’s 18 Handball Championship 2016

Sports

Good morning/day/weekend!

Around this time last year, I published my most successful non-movie related article on the topic of volunteering. Well, today, I’m continuing the tradition and writing about the behind-the-scenes inner workings of another sports event. As usual, the article will focus on my personal experience of the event and won’t be completely objective or universally truthful.

For the past week, I’ve been lucky enough to volunteer at EHF Men’s 18 Handball Championship in Lithuania. This was the first event of this kind for European Handball Federation since the new age group system has been introduced. The championship has been simultaneously held in 3 countries: Bulgaria, Georgia, and Lithuania. The winners of that part of the championship that was held in my country were the team from Israel, who won the final against Italy. The 3rd place went to Austria after they defeated the national youth handball team of The Netherlands.

After working as a team attaché for 2 weeks last year, I was quite sad to find out that I won’t be managing a team during this championship. Instead, I was supposed to be helping the officials of the EHF which seemed kinda sweet deal too. However, by the end of the first of the event, my job  became obsolete and I didn’t do much in terms of helping the local and foreign organizing committees.

Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the championship. I loved spending some quality time with my volunteer friends, which I only see a couple of times per year. However, in terms of the actual volunteering, I felt that I didn’t do much. I was really looking forward to the experience of working with sports professionals from an international federation, but instead, I was just kinda picking up the trash because I didn’t want to just sit there.

The main problem I had, concerning volunteering in this particular event, was the fact that there weren’t any clear lines of communication between the organizers and the volunteers and only a small portion of the volunteers actually did some meaningful work. A proper training session wasn’t held and I felt that the organizers were thinking that since all of the volunteers had previous volunteering experience, they will know what to do. I wish that they would have put more trust in us/me and actually given clearer orders. You can only do so much on your own intuition and I don’t really think that it is up to a subordinate to constantly seek for tasks. Then again, the volunteers, me definitely included, could have asked more questions. This was probably an obvious example of miscommunication and two parties not knowing what to do with each other. I will definitely learn from this whole unfortunate thing.

In the end, I can’t be that mad with the organizers because they did thank us for helping with the event and gave us commemorative gifts and Thank You notes/certificates. I did, however, felt that I didn’t really deserve any of it. Then again, I came to the championship every day and was always ready for work.

Speaking about handball as a sport – I wasn’t familiar with it at all. My background is in swimming and running, so handball was a completely new territory for me. I don’t know if I am completely sold on it as an enjoyable sport but I will definitely give it another shot – will either watch it or ask for one of my friends, who (I think) used to play handball, to teach me the basics.

Bellow, I will include some photos from the event, a picture of the volunteer’s T-shirt and the thank you gifts and any other random bits. In addition, here are the links to the pages of the European Handball Federation, the Lithuania Handball Federation, the actual event, and the Union of Sports’ Volunteers of Lithuania.

Have a great week!

ANTI World Tour in Warsaw | Rihanna

Music

Hello!

I haven’t written a post in a music category for quite some time, but that’s about to change because, on Friday, I went to Rihanna’s ANTI tour show in Warsaw, and really want to tell you about it!

I and a couple of my friends started our journey on an early Friday morning and took an almost 7h drive from Lithuania to the capital of Poland. The road trip was going smoothly, though I cannot say the same about the Polish roads – they are awful and constantly under construction, so we did encounter a few traffic jams.

After arriving in Warsaw and checking into our hostel, we went straight to the stadium – PGE Narodowy. We entered the queue at around 4pm and stood in an extremely hot sun (above 30 degrees Celsius) for 1,5h. At around 6pm we finally reached our ‘seats’/standing places in the first sector, called Golden Circle. We managed to get a spot around 10 meters from the stage and prepared for another 6 hours of waiting, standing and dancing. Before entering the stadium, I had a mini heart attack because my ticket wasn’t scanning properly, so I had to go the security where everyone was trying to speak Polish to me, while I was shouting ‘English, English, please’.

The temperature inside the stadium wasn’t much different from the outside heat. Plus, standing in the crowd is never a pleasant time, so by the time the concert ended and I was dehydrated to the max and really gross and sweaty.

The show started just after 7pm as it was advertised. The first part of the opening act was a 40minute set by DJ Mustard. After a short break, DJ was joined by Big Sean for another 50 minutes of craziness. I’m not even a fan of rap music but was having a time of life during this set. When the European leg of the tour was announced, The Weeknd was listed as one of the opening acts, however, he dropped out a few months prior to the show. The saddest part is that I and one of my friends bought the tickets to this show because we wanted to see The Weeknd the most. Well, at leat Rihanna didn’t drop out of her own show.

Rihanna took to the stage at around 9.30 and performed for 1,5h without stopping. She talked to the audience for a few minutes but not nearly as much as the other performers I’ve seen. She danced a lot and had like 4 or 5 outfit changes: all of her costumes were pantsuits with oversized and shapeless capes or jackets.

The decorations of the stage were minimalistic: mirrors, some lights, a see-through flying corridor and a wall of mousse and soap and bubbles. The singer was joined on stage by a live band, 3 backup singers and a bunch of dancers with no bones – they were amazing.

Rihanna performed her newest songs from the ANTI album like Work and Kiss it Better. She also sang her old hits like Umbrella, Diamonds (my fav song of her) and We Found Love. I, personally, haven’t listened to the ANTI album much so I was basically waiting for all of her old songs. However, I still enjoyed the concert and the whole experience immensely and the fact that I got to share it with two of my friends made the night even better.

I would probably rank Rihanna’s concert at no.3 on my list of live shows. Lady GaGa’s The Born This Way Ball and One Republic’s The Native Tour are still my no.1 and no.2 shows respectively. Rihanna is followed by Enrique Iglesias’s, Ed Sheeran’s, Kylie Minogue’s, Loreen’s and Lana Del Rey’s live concerts.

Bellow, you will find a gallery of photos from the events and I will also include links to a few YouTube videos I’ve uploaded from the concert. My next post will either be a review of the new Woody Allen film or a sightseeing post about Warsaw.

Have a great week!

Top 6 Favorite Youtubers!!

Uncategorized

This week I am going to tell you all about my favorite youtubers. I was planning to do Top 5, but I just couldn’t leave out one of them, so therefore, it is Top 6. I believe that this list will appeal to everybody’s taste, because here we have some nerd stuff, some fashion, lifestyle, adventures and some cooking. (I have a serious sweet tooth problem). Enjoy!

1. FASHION and BEAUTY. There are a lot of great Beauty Gurus on youtube like Tanya Burr, MissGlamorazzi, but my favorite one is Zoe Sugg known as Zoella . She is British vlogger and beauty guru currently living in Brighton. She also has a blog www.zoella.co.uk . I love her quirky and girly personality as well as the way she communicates with her fans. She radiates positive energy towards everybody. I love her style too – girly dresses, shirts with collars ( I can die for a great collar shirt), slouchy jumpers and disco pants. Her hairstyles are also very cute – simple but always polished. Messy buns, halo or fish tale braids are my favorite. On her channel https://www.youtube.com/user/zoella280390 you will find cosmetics’ and clothes’ hauls, DIY videos, “How to” and “favorite things” videos and also little insights into her personal life with Q&As and variety of challenges. Not a long time ago she hit 4 million subscribers and this number is growing everyday.

2.ADVENTURE – when I need some adrenaline the channel I turn to is FunForLouis run by Louis Cole from Great Britain. His daily vlogs show world through his eyes. He has already traveled to every content I think, but right now he is in the USA relaxing after PlaylistLive convention and road trip through out the country. His signature style is dreadlocks, colorful penny boards and a vest t-shirts. I love different intros he does every time and the same line he says at the end of the video : “Peace out, enjoy life and live the adventure. Buuum!”. I believe that this is a great motto for life. He has around 640 thousand subscribers but he deserves a lot more so check him out.: https://www.youtube.com/user/FunForLouis

3. LIFESTYLE – my favorite gay on the whole Internet is Tyler Oakley. He is the person you want to be friends with. His sassy personality, strong opinion and immeasurable love for his people makes him the best there is. His channel is full of everything: challenges, Q&As, fangirling videos, collabs (drunk collabs included) as well as videos addressing important issues (e.g. health care). His always changing hair color never disappoints or bores. Fans love to ship him with other youtubers, but the pair they worship is Troyler (Tyler Oakley + Troye Sivan – fellow South African/Australian youtuber). Tyler’s positive view to life is infectious. The amount of fans he has grows everyday, so become one and SLAY ( I mean join) him here: https://www.youtube.com/user/tyleroakley

4. COOKING – my favorite chef on the Internet is Australian home cook – Ann Reardon form “How too cook that”. On this channel she shows us how to make chocolates desserts and decorations, various theme cakes (Divergent cake, One Direction cake) and other desserts (Facebook dessert, Twitter and Instagram dessert). Her work on youtube led to the creation of her own “Surprise Cakes” app which is really fun for kids and adults likewise to use. Her step by step tutorials while using tools found at hand make everything seem easy and accomplish-able. But be careful – do not eat to much sweets. However, that is a very hard thing to do, when every Friday you find a new indulgent recipe that makes your mouth water. Her half a million subscribers are waiting for you to join right here: https://www.youtube.com/user/howtocookthat

5. NERD – One of my favorite nerd type channels is Emergency Awesome run by Charlie . Here you can find videos about Game of Thrones,Walking Dead,Arrow, Doctor Who and other both fantasy TV series and movies. I really like they way his video are styled. One day you get the review of the episode, the next day Q&A about the review. Here you can get deeper insight into fantasy world. Help to get him to 200 000 subsribers : https://www.youtube.com/user/emergencyawesome

6. NERD – the last channel I want to present is comicbookgilr19 https://www.youtube.com/user/comicbookgirl19 . Her reviews, top lists and other videos make watching TV series and movies even more interesting than it already is. Pre-histories of fantasy worlds, character videos or explanations, “changes from book to a movie” type of videos can all be found on her channel. What I like most about her, is that she is not afraid to be herself and to stand for what she beliefs in : recently she attend SeaWorld protest that want to free sea creatures which are held in captivity.

That’s all for today. I hope you enjoyed this list of my favorite youtubers. Find me on different social media sites :
