Thrift haul (Klaipėda)

Beauty&Fashion

Hello!

Do you remember that I’ve promised to do a thrift haul? Well, I’m keeping my promise!

So, last weekend I visited my aunt who lives in Klaipeda (sightseeing post about that here). Both she and I love thrift-ing, so she took me to the best second-hand stores in her town. We went to at least 5 shops but all of them were from one of two chains of stores: Rubija or Humana (their webpage). Humana has different prices for different clothes and Rubija weights the clothes and you pay for the kilograms and not for individual pieces.

I got way too many tops and a pair of boots which I am extremely excited about. Disclaimer: I am not showing off! I just want to show you that you can get nice stuff on a tight budget. I only paid approximately 10 euros for all of the following:

Firstly, I’ve got this blue and white plaid wide shirt. It’s from the Atmosphere brand. I love wearing shirts like these and have been living in this particular one this whole week. It’s so soft and comfortable and it literally looks good this everything!

Next, I’ve got a simple high-neck grey T-shirt (inspired by Grace Helbig). It’s from a brand SOHO.

Red is one of my favorite colors, so I bought this simple top by Hampton Republic.

Jean jackets are a must for me during spring and summer, so, I felt brave and got this white one! I thought about doing some DIY on it, maybe some tie-dye but I really don’t want to ruin it because it looks nice as it is. Brand – Holiday.

As you might already know, I am a huge GaGa fan so I picked up this black T-shirt with her face on it. I have actually seen her perform live ! I’ve been to one of her Born This Way Ball concerts and this T-shirt is from the merchandise line of that particular tour! I paid cents for it when I could have paid at least 50 euros for it during the concert! A bargain!

P.S. I’ve the same picture that is on the T-shirt as a poster on my wall.

I get dizzy by looking at these next 2 items. The first one is slightly cropped and quite wide stripy top from NEXT. it looks really nice with high waisted pants and skater skirts!

Second item, which induces dizziness, is this white and black no sleeves top with a pattern made of oval shapes. It hangs really nicely, though, it has quite deep cut at the front. However, it pairs up nicely with tuxedo pants! Brand – essence.

Second to last piece was a nod to my childhood! I grew up with Disney movies, I still love them (review of the new Cinderella), I love sporty style, so, this was a perfect blend of all the things I love. It’s a basketball type mesh top with Minnie on it! The back is completely white, so, I’ve got a few white tank tops to wear underneath it because it is very see-through.

And the purchase which I am the happiest about is these Mod 70s inspired boots! (BTW, Mod 70s are on trend this year). I almost didn’t get them, I actually walked out of the store and went back just to get them! They have a white heel and sole and they also have cut-outs at the back! I have only now noticed that one of them is missing a strap but I can fix that: I am planing to make a strap out of a simple black belt.

So, these are all the things I bought! I hope you liked this haul! I will probably do OOTD post next month and a few of these piece will be featured there too.! Have a nice day!

Movie review: Unbroken

Movie reviews

Hi!
On Monday, I went to the cinema to watch Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. I have seen several films depicting World War II events from different angles (Schindler’s list, Fury, Inglorious Basterds, Pearl Harbor, Forest of Gods and The Imitation Game) and now Unbroken joins this list.

In short I would describe the film as a mixture of Life of Pi and Fury with a pinch of Forest of Gods and topped of with Edge of Tomorrow.

Unbroken isn’t Angelina’s directorial debut – it’s her 2nd time being behind the camera. The film tells a story of Louis Zamperini – an Olympic athlete who spent the 2nd World War in a prisoner of war camp in Japan after surviving 47 days of a raft in the middle of the ocean. It’s based on a book by Laura Hillenbrand as well as real life events. Sadly, the real Louis Zamperini died in spring of 2014 and didn’t get to see his life on the big screen.

2015/01/img_3216.png

Acting

Louis Zamperini is portrayed by Jack O’Connell – a British actor who is best known for his work on the TV show Skins. I liked his performance, it was so-so at the beginning of the movie but in the end, when Jack really got into the character, it was just amazing. The emotional dual between him and the Bird truly showed his talent and made me enjoy the scene which was actually horrible and heartbreaking but inspiring at the same time. I would love to see more of his work.

Speaking about the Bird – a Japanese general who tortured Louis both mentally and physically – he was played by a Japanese singer Miyavi. The character seemed a bit cartoon-y to me – almost like a stupid school bully. Nonetheless, I hated the character almost as much as Christoph Waltz’s Hans Landa in the Inglorious Basterds, so Miyavi did a great job as a villain.

2015/01/img_3205.png

Other cast members included : Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Finn Wittrock, Jai Courtney, Luke Treadaway, Jordan Patrick Smith and many others. As you can already tell, this is an all male cast type of movie. I don’t have any problems with that because there were no women at war. However, I do have a problem with the fact that I can’t remember anything about the characters that these actors played with the exceptions of Jack O’Connel and Miyavi. They didn’t develop them well enough and didn’t make me care about them or even remember them at all.

2015/01/img_3213.png

Visuals and Directing

The movie is beautifully shot and I really liked Angelina’s work as a director. The scenes in the water were cool but sometimes cheesy while prisoner of war camp was portrayed realistically.

2015/01/img_3217.png2015/01/img_3219.png

Sport

Louis Zamperini was an Olympic runner and for me as an athlete, the part which told us about his athletic career was the most interesting. I also loved the fact that they didn’t diminish the importance of sport in Louis Zamperini’s life. If he hadn’t been an athlete and hadn’t trained as hard as he did, he probably wouldn’t have survived the war. I loved the clip of the real Louis running with the Olympic torch in 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan.

2015/01/img_3208.png

Religion

Louis Zamperini also was a religious person, who found God when he needed him the most. Religion’s theme was mentioned in the film but didn’t explored deeply enough. The end of the film was really touching and made me tear up. It showed the importance of forgiveness – sometimes it’s better to turn the other cheek than to raise a fist.

Criticisms

Unbroken received mixed reviews from the critics and was shut down from the award’s season. Overall, I liked the film, though, a few scenes were really unbelievable and took me out of the movie. For example, their fight with a shark – you can’t catch a shark with your bare hands. The pacing had a few problems, but I would still recommend to watch this movie if you are a sport’s fan and interested in history.

Rate 4/5

R.I.P Oscar de la Renta

Beauty&Fashion

Yesterday, the world has lost a truly inspirational and iconic designer – Oscar de la Renta. He died at age 82 from cancer. Throughout his life, the Dominican designer worked with Cristobal Balenciaga, dressed first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and established his company in New York in 1965 – that’s only a few of his many achievements.
De la Renta’s signature was timeless femininity in his designs: elegant and flattering silhouettes, full girly skirts, dresses cinched at the waist, floral patterns and soft, pastel colors. His ready-to-wear creations made label Oscar de la Renta known and beloved by many celebrities, he was an inspiration to other designers and an idol to the simple fans of fashion, like me. Although my personal style is quite masculine and edgy, I adore the softness and feminine feeling Oscar’s clothes bring. I don’t think I could pull off such grace and delicacy.
In honor of Oscar de la Renta, I decided to share with you my favorite designs from his collections (pre-fall, fall, spring and resort) from these past few years (2011-2015). Photos are taken from style.com site.

Outdoor #OOTD + A/W 14 trends

Beauty&Fashion

Hi!

I hope all of you are having a great Sunday! For this week’s fashion post, I decided to show you my favorite (recently) piece of clothing in action – my new parka. I have already done a post about it. (Click here). But now, I want to show you some photos of it in a normal light and how does it look when I put it on. I paired it with simple rolled up blue jeans and high top Converse All Stars sneakers. On my neck, you can see a mustard (orang-y brown) color knitted snood which I made myself. (DIY!!!). (Sorry for the weird color in the close-up photo – snood is much brighter in real life, like in the full outfit photo).

img_1569 img_1570

I am in love with this parka and I can’t wait for the weather to get cold so that I could wear it all the time. Moreover, according to GLAMOUR UK magazine’ September issue’s article by Lucy Walker, military details, edgy street-wear, faux-fur and hoods are trending big time and this parka nails all of these trends! 1 parka – 4 trends. What is more, I like the fact that high fashion isn’t taking itself as seriously as it did before. Ironic bags, T-shirts and dresses at MOSCHINO look cool and brighten my mood every time I see them. (Video from the runway show by ELLE.) I have full wardrobe of colorful slogan T-shirts which I am going to pair with neutral black or grey skirts, jeans or trousers so as not to upstage the main piece – fun T-shirt. In addition, knits are in fashion once again and a few shelves of sweaters and cardigans definitely won’t stay in my wardrobe unloved and unworn. Space elements are also hot this season and as a huge Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy (movie review) fan, I will finally be able to wear merchandise and looks stylish.

I hope you liked this short post about A/W 14 trends and how I will wear them. What are your staple pieces for A/W and are there any trends you fancy this season? Have a great week!

Collection: Magazines

Beauty&Fashion

Hi!

I have previously shared my nail polish collection and posters/quotes collections with you. This time, I will show you my magazine collection and boy; I do have a lot of magazines.

My collection consist of 71+ magazines, most of them are fashion and art journals, but there are also a few lifestyle ones. If you look closely, you might find couple of political magazines as well.

Lithuanian magazines:

Cosmopolitan Lithuanian version – I usually buy these if a celebrity I like is on the cover.

L’OFFICIEL – a Lithuanian version of a popular French fashion magazine – I get them cheaply at a book fair in spring. Of course, they are a couple of months old, but I get all the latest fashion news from other sources, so it’s nice to flip through them even if they are out of date.

MADA (Fashion) magazine – well, these magazines should belong in a museum, because they are from 2007-2009. They were the predecessors of L’OFFICIEL magazine in my country. My old school’s library actually gifted them to me for volunteering there.

10654150_958441527516010_580255557_n

American magazines:

Teen Vogue – about two years ago, my aunt gifted me the subscription of this magazine and I have been a loyal subscribed for 2 whole years and I am currently waiting for the first issue of my third year as a subscriber.

Seventeen – the same story as with Teen Vogue. However, I grew out of this magazine (and I only turned 17 like two months ago); it repeats a lot of the same themes and features the same stars on the cover.

10715740_958441504182679_1549581931_n

  1. British magazines:

VOGUE UK – the first issue of Vogue was actually a gift from my friends for my 15th birthday because, back then, my biggest dream was to work in that magazine and one day I wished to become the editor-in-chief of it. Good old days when I knew what I wanted to do.

ELLE UK and Harper’s Bazaar UK and InStyle UK– I buy them if I am interested in the life and work of the celebrity who is on the cover. As you can see, I love Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried, Candice Swanepoel and Emilia Clarke.

Glamour UK – I pick this one the same way I pick Elle or InStyle. However, I really enjoy the articles which they publish and how you can always relate to the problems which are discussed.

10711552_958441514182678_891773262_n

  1. Miscellaneous magazines: I haven’t taken a photo of them because they are just so random.

Between them, you might find a STAR magazine from 2005 (found it at a flea market and picked it as a joke), special collector’s issue of People’s magazine featuring One Direction (a friend brought this magazine from South Korea). The last interesting item is Citizen Today magazine about politics, economics and health care – don’t even ask me where I got it.

I hope you liked this little glimpse in one of few of my obsessions. Teen Vogue is definitely my favorite fashion magazine because it’s the most age appropriate for me.  When I need fashion advice, I always open it and find an inspiration to dress the way I like. For a quick life cheat – Glamour gives the best solutions and brings a smile to my face. Have a great week! Bye!

Haul: Autumn/Winter wardrobe UPDATE

Beauty&Fashion

Hello!

Recently, I have been shopping and picked a few really great pieces for my wardrobe. I want to share them with you and talk a bit about how I am going to style them.

The first piece is simple – my high top Chuck Taylor’s finally arrived. I’ve got classical all-stars Converse shoes made from white canvas.  They practically look good with everything: circle skirts, jeans, skater dresses, shorts and etc.  And who doesn’t have Converse shoes? Everybody needs at least one pair of them.

Price: 44 euros (I bought mine on Amazon)

10714847_957782920915204_60488691_n

The second thing I bought is this chiffon oversized sleeveless see-through top from NewYorker (My every haul has to have at least one item of clothing from NewYorker). It’s shorter at the front and longer in the back. It’s black with red lip stain print. I can see myself wearing it with skinny jeans and heels or boots and a black wool jacket, with body con skirt or even black body con dress underneath. I am also going to try it with a circle skirt and belt it at the waist.

Price: 3 euros – bought it on sale at NewYorker

10717677_957782930915203_761813898_n

The third thing is this TOPSHOP jumper. It really thick, a bit oversized and has pink/blue flowery print. I have been wearing it a lot, although, I’ve just bought it like 3 weeks ago. It’s really comfortable and looks nice with jeans and converse shoes.

Price: about 1 euro – found it at a second hand store.

10716108_957782927581870_1818110073_n

P.S. I wore it today with skinny jeans and white converse. As an accessory, I put on three bracelets to complement each part of my outfit – white bracelet for white converse; pink and blue bracelets for the jumper!

10716178_957792687580894_1669175541_n

The last piece I’ve bought is the piece I am most happy about. I have been looking for a good winter coat and couldn’t find one. But store BERSHKA was my savior. This parka style coat is super versatile. It’s in this dark brown mustardy color; has huge pockets and can be cinched in at the waist. It is also fur lined, so it’s super cozy and warm. The fur can be removed and I even think I can wear it separately! Parka without the fur is also great when the weather hasn’t gotten super cold yet. It’s like 3 coats in 1.

Price : 100 euros (Get it here)

Back-to-school haul + school year in my country

Beauty&Fashion

Hello!

Since it’s almost autumn and most of you already started your new school year and I am starting mine in a week, I decided to do a Back-to-School type blog post. This will mostly be a haul of clothes and accessories for school, but in the end I will also include some other goods: like notebooks and etc., which I enjoy using. Moreover, I will give you some information about the school system in Lithuania.

There are 3 types of schools in Lithuania: elementary school (4 years), middle school (4 years) and high school (4 years). You don’t necessarily need to change schools tree times: elementary and middle schools most of the time are in the same building and are practically the same school that consists of 8 years. I have attended one school from 1st to 8th grades in my neighborhood (it was like 10 min walk away from my house) and I transferred to a private high school (gymnasium) in the 9th grade which is located in the city center. On September 1st, which is an official start day of the school year in Lithuania and is also considered to be a celebration of knowledge day, I will be starting my senior year (12th grade).

In my school, we have to wear black jackets – they are an official uniform. However, a lot of students don’t wear them and it really pisses me off because I used to wear one all the time.

During 12th grade, we don’t have any school dances, proms or homecomings like US schools have. But we do have our interpretations of these celebrations.

We have a 100 day celebration, in which we commemorate that we have only 100 days of school left. I guess it’s like our prom. Then, we have a Last Bell celebration, which is held on the last day of school before we star our exams. After the exams comes graduation. But in order to graduate, you have to pass exams. Lithuanian literature exam is mandatory for all students. You need to pass 2 exams to graduate and get a high school diploma and 3 exams to get into university. However, almost all of the students are taking from 4 to 6 exams.

We also have 3 holidays during school years. 1 week at the end of October, 2 weeks during Christmas and 1 week during Easter. We star our summer holidays at the beginning of June. Smaller kids, like elementary school students have more holidays, for example 3 weeks during Christmas instead of 2, bonus week of holidays in Spring after or before Easter (depends when the Easter celebration is that year) and so forth.

But enough of boring information, let’s go shopping! Disclaimer: I am not trying to show off, actually all of these clothes were bought on sale and I hope that this post will show that you can buy some great stuff even if you are on a tight budget.

Summer favorites/must-haves

Beauty&Fashion

Hello!

Let me begin by saying that I have been planning this blog post for months. In the beginning in was supposed to be spring favorites but, as we are in the middle of summer, I got to change it up a bit.

So, I hope you will enjoy this post and it will be helpful as well as entertaining for you.

Beauty products:

During summer, my skin becomes dry and sun burnt, thus I need great moisturizers:

*Avon Care Rich Moisture face cream – I love it because it is not too rich. I mean it hydrates my skin but doesn’t make it greasy.

*ISANA Limited Edition body cream with pomegranates and figs – it smells amazingly and it is perfect to use after sunbathing.

*Avon Care hand & nail creme with glycerin – after using it my hands became so soft as they never have been before.

*EOS lip balm (strawberry sorbet flavor) – the smell of it is so fresh and natural.

Accessories:

*Sunglasses are a must during summer. Mine are from NewYorker and they have this really cool ombre effect.

*Recently I have been wearing a lot of rings. They add something special to every outfit without overpowering it and being too much. Colorful ones are from NewYorker, the one with flowers is from Avon, golden ones are from H&M and turquoise one is handmade. I painted a thick layer of nail polish on a coin and then topped it off with another layer of top coat. After it dried completely I glued it on a ring base. I love turquoise color of that one, it goes with practically everything.

Shoes: I love wearing wedges and these one have korke heal. The color of them is this pretty pink/orange coral and the front of them is covered with golden metal. It sparkles wonderfully in the sun. I bought them at a local boutique and they were so cheap, such a bargain.

Clothes:

I love sleeveless shirts. I think they are an amazing way to look stylish and sophisticated and at the same time to stay comfortable.

*The light green ones is very simple, casual from the brand Gina Laura.

*The motley cotton ones are from Stradivarius. I love that quirky, almost tribal print. Quirky prints are very in right now as ELLE UK suggests.

*Bottom left ones are from New Yorker. They have sparkly beaded collar and V form cutout at the back. They are also longer at the back and shorter at the front.

*The last ones, black with pink Eiffel towers are from H&M. They have chiffon front and cotton back.

The staple piece that I love wearing all summer long is long chiffon skirt. I have one in dark blue color and I am in love with it. Long skirts were huge trend last year but I am taking it to 2014 summer.I hope you enjoyed this slightly different post and have a great summer.
