Swimathom + Sport Relief Mile

Welcome to another post about a sports event! I haven’t done one in a while because I haven’t participated in any events since December. However, this past weekend I swam and ran in the Sport Relief Games!

Sport Relief is an organization which is trying to make our a world a better place through sport. Every 2 years, Sport Relief holds various running, swimming and cycling events all over UK and half of the money raised go to people in need in Africa, while the other half is spent in helping people in the UK itself. You can get more info about the actual events as well as the specific issues that Sport Relief helps to fight in here.

I started my Friday with a healthy 1km swim with my university’s girls’ swimming team! All 5 of us did a kilometer each and we finished the 5km in a bit over an hour! This event – Swimathon – was not about speed or racing but about spending time with friends/acquaintances/strangers and raising money for a great cause.

All of the participants represented a particular team. My university’s girls’ swimming team was put into the Green team. If you look up the hashtag #TeamGreenSwim, you can see people from all over the UK, swimming while wearing the green cap (pictured below). Since the cap is a tiny bit too small for me to wear in an everyday practice, I will probably frame it and put it on my wall.

In addition, all of the swimmers got a commemorative medal to add to their collections. Nevertheless, all of these material possessions are nothing compared to the awesome feeling one gets when one does something good for others! And that’s what Swimathon was all about!

I am sorry that I don’t have any photos from the actual event. The Aquatics Centre that I did this swimming challenge in has very strict rules about privacy and a strong no-photos policy.

On Sunday, I’ve also attended the running marathon for the same cause. People could choose to either run or walk 1, 3 or 6 miles. Since I haven’t been jogging much and was sick at the beginning of the week, I chose the middle distance. It was also quite weird for me to count the distance in miles since I usually use kilometers.

The Sport Relief Mile Running Marathon was held on the Aberdeen’s Sport’s Village’s brand new outdoor running track. I have never run in an actual stadium before. Kaunas Half-Marathon would start and finish in the stadium but we would only run a few hundred meters in there.

Running in the stadium, on an actual running track, also meant that we were running in circles, which is also not a thing that I usually do – I am lucky to be able to jog in a nearby park or even by the sea whenever I want.

However, running laps (I did 12) also has its perks: you always know how many laps  you have left and there is always people in the stands, cheering you up the whole way through.


  

The Sport Relief Mile in Aberdeen had only 100 to 150 participants, the majority of them were families. I was surprised that this event didn’t have a bigger turnout.

I enjoyed running my 3 miles, I was going at a steady pace and finished my fastest run this year! The weather was also perfect for running – warm but not too sunny, cloudy but not rainy. I only wish that the wind would have been weaker, however, this is Aberdeen – it is always windy in here, so I’m kinda used to it.

All of the participants of the run received a commemorative medal and a runner’s number. The organisers also supplied the participants with bottles of water and bananas to snack on after the run.


Overall, I had a really great time, participating both in the swimming and running challenges for Sport Relief. It was nice to do one challenge in a team, and another one alone. If you have never done anything like this before but would like to start participating in public sports events, I highly suggest that you try your hand at charity runs/swims/else. The main goal of these physical challenges is to have a great time while raising money and awareness for a good cause, rather than competing, so it’s a perfect place to start!

Swimming Marathon: Lampedžiai 2015

Today, Lithuania (my country) commemorated one of its many national celebrations – the Coronation of the only King of LithuaniaMindaugas.

I celebrated this historical event by participating in a swimming marathon as I had done for the past 5 years (at least). The swimming marathon took place in a man-made lake of Lampedziai, which is located in my home town of Kaunas.

The weather was great for swimming but really bad for doing anything else. We got a heat wave this past weekend and the temperature reached around 32 degrees Celsius (around 90 F). While it’s a normal temperature for some countries, its extremely high for Lithuania. However, these past 5-7 years we have been getting more extreme weather because of the climate change.

The temperature of the water was really high too – at least 22 to 24 degrees Celsius (72-75 F). It was pleasant to swim in but you couldn’t really relax in the water or freshen up after sunbathing because it was just too warm. The distance that all the athletes swam was 2 km.

I wasn’t really preparing much for this specific marathon, I had like a week of training. Regardless of that, I still had a good time and felt really comfortable while swimming. I wasn’t trying to go as fast as I could have because I just wanted to swim for my own pleasure. Does that makes sense? I hope it does.

Swimming Marathon: Switerzland 2015

Last week, I’ve participated in my first swimming marathon this summer. That was The Swiss Swimming Marathon 2015 (in Lithuanian language – Šveicarijos plaukimo maratonas 2015). I have already explained why this marathon and the village that it is held in has the same name as a European country. You can find that blog post here.

Anyway, since I haven’t been training at all, I chose the shortest 1 km distance and even managed to win it in a women’s group. It was one of the hardest swims of my career. The weather also seemed way too cold. The organizers said that the water temperature was 20 degrees Celsius (68 F), but it felt like 17 C (62 F) at best. The air temperature was 22 C (71 F).

I wasn’t even planning on attending this marathon but then the nostalgia kicked in. This was the 6th Swiss Swimming Marathon and I have participated in all of them since the beginning. Moreover, this is probably my last year of swimming with my team because I am graduating this year and moving to Scotland . So, I figured that this is probably my last chance to swim in that particular open-water competition, so what the hell, let’s do it.

Olympic day 2015

Some of you might know that I am a sports fan. I have been swimming for 10 years and have been participating in running and cycling competitions these past 3 years. I also really enjoy being in a spectators position: I will literally watch anything from basketball to chess.

Olympic day is an annual international celebration. The festive event is always held in a different city of a country during the month of June. This happens all over the world.

This celebration tries to educate people about different types of sports and advertises healthy lifestyle. This year, the Olympic Day in Lithuania took place in my city – Kaunas. The event started like the real Olympics start: with the passing of a torch and the symbolic fire lighting. In addition, posters with Olympic rings were hanging everywhere, so that they were visible at all times.

There was a wide variety of activities to choose from: attendees could try their hand at archery, basketball, volleyball, football, could exercise at Cross-fit booth, learn about fencing or wrestling. They could compete in a cycling, climbing or running competition.

I chose the running. The organizers offered  3 distances: 5 km or 10 km and the Olympic Mile Run. I picked the last one and ran the symbolic distance of 1,928 meters. The weather was really hot and dry, so these few kilometers were hard work.

I also appreciated the fact that the Paralympic sports were also included and represented in an equal manner.

I really enjoyed this celebratory event which was held mainly in Azuolynas (Oak Tree) park by the statue of Darius and Girėnas (they introduced Lithuanians to a lot of different types of sports during the Inter-War period, despite being famous pilots. Fun random fact: I attend high school which is named after them in honor of their achievements).

The organization was great and the mood was really happy and upbeat. Everybody were so energetic and optimistic. This event really brighten up my city and its citizens. All the participants received commemorative T-Shirts, so all of us looked like a giant team: united, happy and full of life. If only for one day.

Lithuania’s Independence Day Run 2015

Today, I officially opened my running season of 2015 with a first running competition. The marathon was held in order to celebrate my country’s Restoration of Independence Day. We have 2 independence days in Lithuania: in 1918, on the 16th of February we announced our Independence but during the 2nd World War my country was occupied by the Soviet Union and we only restored our independent state 25 years ago: in 1990, in 11th of March.

The running marathon is held every year in Jonava and it is also dedicated to one of the pioneers of the Reformation movement in Lithuania – Abraomas Kulvietis. There are a few statues of him in Jonava (you can see one of them in the 3rd photo).

Around 550 athletes participated in the run. They could choose from 2 distances: 3.4 km and 15 km and were divided into age groups accordingly. I chose the shorter distance because,lately, I hadn’t been training much.

It took me a decent amount of time to finish the distance: my result isn’t great if you look at the results of others but it is okay for me, especially at the start of the season.

Sport: Running for Kaunas

There hasn’t been a post in my blog about sport and active life for a while, but today, I’ve participated in 3rd annual “Bek uz Kauna” marathon (Marathon “Run For Kaunas”). It was my second time running this specific marathon. Around 1500 professional athletes and amateur runners chose 10 km or 5 km distance and were running in the city center.

The weather was perfect for running, the sun was shining and there was no wind at all. I was a bit unprepared for this run, lately, I have been running only 2-3 times a week and, more importantly, I have been getting cramps in my right foot. By the time I had finished my 5 km distance, my foot had already started to cramp, so I was happy that I didn’t choose a longer distance.

All the participants received a commemorative medal and a gift from the sponsor company (various kinds of breads).

I am planning to participate in the PINK run for breast cancer awareness at the end of October. I hope my cramping foot will let me do that. Have a nice week!

My summer holidays in Lithuania 2014

How are you feeling today? Since it is the last day of summer, I decided to tell you all about my summer holidays and what I have been up to.

You have already read about swimming and running marathons that I have participated in this summer as well as my trip to Berlin. You can check those posts again here: Multi-sports, Festival, Swimming 1, Swimming 2, Swimming 3, Swimming 4.

But that is not all what I did this summer:

In the middle of July, me and a bunch of my friends went camping for a couple of days. We rented kayaks and rowed 20 km down the river Dubysa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubysa). In the evening we went swimming and relaxed in a sauna, then spent all night talking by the fire and went to sleep to our tents in the early morning. The next day, after late breakfast, we played football and volleyball and then went home. It was a nice little trip that helped us bond even more.

At the end of July, me and my dad went to Klaipėda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaip%C4%97da) and spent a couple of days by the Baltic Sea. On Monday, we went to resort town Smiltynė (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiltyn%C4%97) by ferry, walked in a pine forest for a bit and spent the rest of the day by the sea, sunbathing and swimming. On Tuesday, we rented bikes and took another ferry to Nida (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nida,_Lithuania) (we went by Curonian lagoon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curonian_Lagoon) and then cycled back to Klaipeda. We cycled 50 km in 5 hours. The same day we walked around the harbor, saw a sculpture for people who died at sea. On Wednesday,  we went back to Smiltynė and relaxed for a bit before going back to the city.

In the middle of August, we did another cycling trip from Kaunas to Kačergine. We cycled about 30 km there and back. Kacergines forest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ka%C4%8Dergin%C4%97) was amazing and perfect place for calm recreation.

And just today me and my family went to the park by Kaunas lagoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaunas_Reservoir_Regional_Park )  and walked around, visited Pažaislis monastery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pa%C5%BEaislis_Monastery).

Sightseeing: Birštonas city, Lithuania

This past weekend, I have visited my aunt who lives in Birštonas – a small resort type city in the southern part of Lithuania. This visit gave me an idea to start new series of post called: Sightseeing. I will try to tell you about places I have seen and have visited across Lithuania as well as the rest of the world.
So without further ado, let’s begin.
Birštonas was first mentioned in 1382. It got its resort status in 1842. Even knights, lords and ladies liked to relax here during 14th-18th centuries. Down bellow you will find photos of town’s central park. Old pine trees grow there and make this park a beautiful spot to relax, walk around or do sports. There are a few playgrounds for kids, outdoor exercise equipment, basketball court, and skateboarding ramp, summer stage for live performances, table tennis court and golf court.
If you don’t like walking under the trees, you are welcomed to enjoy a walk or a bicycle ride by the river Nemunas. The view is astonishing. This relaxed environment helps people to recover from stress, depression or illness. Because of this, Birštonas has many sanatoriums and spas. People come from all over the world to recover from serious illness or injuries. The area is also famous for its mineral water wells.
Whether you choose to read a book by the river or walk around the park, while breathing fresh air and viewing local artists’ sculptures, you will definitely enjoy your time in Birštonas. If nature is not your thing, you are welcomed to walk around Birštonas city, see old neo gothic churches and rare buildings or even visit a town’s museum.
I really enjoyed my walk around Birštonas, it helped to clear my mind after a hard school week. By the time our walk was coming to an end it started to rain and the wind picked up, so we had to run to my aunt’s place. Here, while snacking on oatmeal raisin cookies and tiramisu cake accompanied with sweet lemon tea, we chatted about life and plans for future.
