Welcome to the last sports update post this summer. Well, it’s technically no longer summer, but, to me, the autumn doesn’t start until I leave for Scotland and that’s only happening on Tuesday.

Anyway, today’s entry is dedicated to another running event I participated in – in my native language, it’s called Azuolyno Begimas which loosely translate to Oak Grove Run (it is held in an Oak Grove park). This is the 4th running competition of this kind and it usually happens twice a year – at the beginning of autumn and at the start of spring.

All of the participants (around a thousand of them) could choose from a variety of distances. The professional runners or more athletic people were able to run 15km, 10km or 5km, while the beginner runners and amateurs could try their hand at a free 3km Fun Run. There were also special distances for pupils, kids, families, and pets with their owners.

This particular run was quite special and interesting because I did something that I’ve never done before – I ran two distances in a single day during the same event. I did the 10 km distance – wasn’t really happy with my time or the state of my legs and feet – and I also accompanied my aunt on her first ever run – we did the 3km together. The second run was much more pleasant – not only shorter and easier but way more enjoyable too – I liked helping my aunt achieve her own personal goal.

The weather for running was quite good – the temperature was around 15 degrees Celsius and it was quite cloudy, so the sun wasn’t shining into one’s eyes or adding any unnecessary heat and warmness. However, by the time I was finishing the 10k, it started to rain which wasn’t that great or comfortable, especially when running with glasses.

All of the runners received their runner’s numbers and commemorative wooden medals. The participant’s package also included a discount card for hummel sneakers, a free entry to a sports center, a month’s subscription to an online exercise platform, an energy drink and a pot of quickly preparable porridge.

Since I’m going back to Aberdeen in a few days, I will miss out on quite a few running events in my native country. In a few weeks, a memorial run organized by a local university will be held, while a week after that there will be a walking/hiking event. The first week of October would have been reserved for a charity run to raise awareness for breast cancer if I was still living in Lithuania. However, I’m excited to get back to the UK and to start a new year at university. I also hope to find some running events in my ‘other’ hometown.

Another Night Run 2016

About a month ago, I told you about a charity night run that I participated in. Well, yesterday, I did another night run and I would like to share this experience with you.

This particular night run was organized by the same people who arranged last year’s end of summer night run. In 2015, all of the participants ran 8km: the route started in the Nemunas Island and spanned throughout the whole Old Town of Kaunas.

This year, the athletes and running enthusiasts could choose one of two distances – 4km (2 laps) or 8km (4 laps). The location of the event was also changed – it was held in the closed territory of this outdoor shopping centre/hangar market, called Urmas. It is a popular shopping destination in Kaunas, so this whole running event was either a brilliant marketing scheme or a huge and lucky coincidence.

It was weird running during the night because it was actually really dark – we only set off at 10pm. It was quite scary to run in a complete darkness during parts of the race – I was afraid I would hurt my feet or ankles. Other parts of the route had enough lights to run safely. After and before the actual run, the participants could listen to live music or watch the laser show. All of the runners, on top of receiving their runner’s number, got glow-in -the-dark bracelets.

The start signal of the run was really cool and fitting for the night run – it was a firework! Nobody wanted to run as soon as it started – everybody wanted to fully see it before setting off on the run.

I did the 4km distance and was quite happy with my time. This run was more like a rehearsal run for a big competition I’m participating in next weekend.

I enjoyed running my small distance as usual. I’m not the fastest runner but I always love the feeling I get after I finish the distance.

This is another short update post which belongs to the sports category.

I wanted to quickly tell you that I participated in another charity run – this time, it was a night run organized by a newly established motivational club. The event was advertised solely on facebook and 300 people actually answered the invite and came to run. All the profits went to a charity that helps people with mental illnesses.

I enjoyed running the 5k  distance, especially because a few of my friends came to watch or to run with me. The route was located near the river so it was quite a scenic run.

The next day, I participated in my 8th (out of 15) Lampedziai Swimming Marathon. Overall, this was probably my 26th open water competition.

The weather was not great – the sky was covered in dark clouds but, thankfully, it only started to rain after all the swimmer finished the 2km, 4km or 300m race. The water was quite warm, though.

I was quite pleased with my time – it was not great but definitely better than I expected since I no longer train as much as I used to. The next swimming marathon will be in 2 weeks.

I really enjoy the fact that my hometown of Kaunas, Lithuania is becoming more and more active when it comes to sports events. Although I only spend 3-4 months a year staying there, I still considered it to be my home, so the ideas that my city is modernizing and that its citizens do actually care about their health and fitness really please me.

Kaunas Marathon 2016

Welcome to another running post. This one is dedicated to the 4th annual Kaunas Running Marathon. 

The marathon was started in 2013 and I’ve participated in all 4 of them, running either 10km or 5km distance. It is the biggest running event in my hometown as well as the 3rd biggest running competition in Lithuania.

After running the 5k distance last year, in 2016, I chose the 10k (I also did 10k in 2013 and 2014). I haven’t trained much before the marathon but was really happy with my result: I gave it all I had and reached my personal objective.

Kaunas Marathon has always been a celebration for the whole town. The short route (for 5k and 10k) is located solely in the Old Town of Kaunas, while the long route (for 21k and 42k) starts and ends there as well. Having a running event in the city centre means that all the runners are supported by crowds of spectators. It’s always nice to hear the sounds of claps and encouraging shouts when you run by.

The 4th Annual Kaunas Marathon had around 4000 participants: around 1500 ran the 5k, around 1000 – the 10k distance, 500 people did the 1.5km run for families and children, while another thousand of athletes did the marathon and the half-marathon.

Marathon: 5 km for Lithuania

Welcome to another short descriptive post about a running event that I participated in – 5 km fun for Lithuanians of the World. Without further ado, let’s begin!img_0636-1On June 4th, I ran 5 km for my country alongside other Lithuanians from all over the world. Let me explain. Every year, during summer, amateur Lithuanian runners (that live in their native country as well as abroad) run a 5 km distance in order to celebrate their heritage and to strengthen their bond to the motherland. Less than 3 million people live in Lithuania and probably the same amount of Lithuanians live abroad, mainly in the UK (like I do), US, Ireland, Germany, France and a bunch of other countries. So, the fact that they/we (both those staying in Lithuania and the emigrants) can all come together and celebrate their/our country, while doing something that they/we love – running – is pretty magical.

Since I’m home for the summer, I didn’t get a chance to participate in this run in a foreign city (the full map of all the running locations worldwide is here). However, I still did the run in my native town. Only around 50 people ran with me and I was one of the last ones to finish, but I was still really happy with my result – it was the best one of this season.

All the runners received athlete’s numbers, commemorative certificates and medals from the organisers. We ran in the park, so the route was pleasant and quite easy (no steep hills).

Color Me Rad Aberdeen 2016

Welcome to another post about a sports event that I had a chance to participate in – Color Me Rad Run in Aberdeen, UK.

This was the second time that the color run was held in Aberdeen. For me, though, this was the first ever color run that I ran in and I gotta say – I have never had so much fun at any running event before.

Around 3k people participated in this colorful celebration and ran or walked (the majority of people walked, which was quite frustrating to those who ran, including me) the 5km distance. We all set off wearing white T-Shirts and colorful sunglasses to protect our eyes. Throughout the race, we got splattered with colorful powders and colorful gel, so, by the end of it, our white T-Shirts were far from white. All of the paints were non-toxic, so the event was safe health wise.

After the run, all the participants basically raved, danced and were jumping around by the stage. The songs were a bit old but still great – everybody knew them and could sing along. The hosts were amazing – their organized some games for the runners and were throwing prizes into the crowd. We also did a few color throws, where we would all count down from 10 and just go crazy with the color bombs (packets of colorful powder) – we would all end up in a giant cloud of colors. It was amazing to see ‘it’ from the side but even more magical participate in the throwing and be inside that ‘cloud’.

The event took place in a beautiful park in south-east side of Aberdeen. I live on the north-west side of town, so I had to take a few buses to reach the location of the event. The best part was going back home via the bus through the city centre, where tons of people were staring at my dirty clothes and face.

The event was organised nicely: there was enough free water for all the runners, a food stall and a merchandise booth. I got a Color Me Rad wristbrand to remember this day. Swimathom + Sport Relief Mile

Welcome to another post about a sports event! I haven’t done one in a while because I haven’t participated in any events since December. However, this past weekend I swam and ran in the Sport Relief Games!

Sport Relief is an organization which is trying to make our a world a better place through sport. Every 2 years, Sport Relief holds various running, swimming and cycling events all over UK and half of the money raised go to people in need in Africa, while the other half is spent in helping people in the UK itself. You can get more info about the actual events as well as the specific issues that Sport Relief helps to fight in here.

I started my Friday with a healthy 1km swim with my university’s girls’ swimming team! All 5 of us did a kilometer each and we finished the 5km in a bit over an hour! This event – Swimathon – was not about speed or racing but about spending time with friends/acquaintances/strangers and raising money for a great cause.

All of the participants represented a particular team. My university’s girls’ swimming team was put into the Green team. If you look up the hashtag #TeamGreenSwim, you can see people from all over the UK, swimming while wearing the green cap (pictured below). Since the cap is a tiny bit too small for me to wear in an everyday practice, I will probably frame it and put it on my wall.

In addition, all of the swimmers got a commemorative medal to add to their collections. Nevertheless, all of these material possessions are nothing compared to the awesome feeling one gets when one does something good for others! And that’s what Swimathon was all about!

I am sorry that I don’t have any photos from the actual event. The Aquatics Centre that I did this swimming challenge in has very strict rules about privacy and a strong no-photos policy.

On Sunday, I’ve also attended the running marathon for the same cause. People could choose to either run or walk 1, 3 or 6 miles. Since I haven’t been jogging much and was sick at the beginning of the week, I chose the middle distance. It was also quite weird for me to count the distance in miles since I usually use kilometers.

The Sport Relief Mile Running Marathon was held on the Aberdeen’s Sport’s Village’s brand new outdoor running track. I have never run in an actual stadium before. Kaunas Half-Marathon would start and finish in the stadium but we would only run a few hundred meters in there.

Running in the stadium, on an actual running track, also meant that we were running in circles, which is also not a thing that I usually do – I am lucky to be able to jog in a nearby park or even by the sea whenever I want.

However, running laps (I did 12) also has its perks: you always know how many laps  you have left and there is always people in the stands, cheering you up the whole way through.


  

The Sport Relief Mile in Aberdeen had only 100 to 150 participants, the majority of them were families. I was surprised that this event didn’t have a bigger turnout.

I enjoyed running my 3 miles, I was going at a steady pace and finished my fastest run this year! The weather was also perfect for running – warm but not too sunny, cloudy but not rainy. I only wish that the wind would have been weaker, however, this is Aberdeen – it is always windy in here, so I’m kinda used to it.

All of the participants of the run received a commemorative medal and a runner’s number. The organisers also supplied the participants with bottles of water and bananas to snack on after the run.


Overall, I had a really great time, participating both in the swimming and running challenges for Sport Relief. It was nice to do one challenge in a team, and another one alone. If you have never done anything like this before but would like to start participating in public sports events, I highly suggest that you try your hand at charity runs/swims/else. The main goal of these physical challenges is to have a great time while raising money and awareness for a good cause, rather than competing, so it’s a perfect place to start!

Christmas Run 2015| Kaunas, Lithuania

Welcome to another blog post about a running event! This is my second Christmas Run this year. You can read about the first one right here.

The 12th annual Christmas Run took place on Saturday (December 19th). It was organized by the Runners’ Association of Lithuania. All the athletes could have chosen one out of three distances: 2,3km, 5,6km, and 11,2km. The running trail went through the pine park/forest of Panemune and by the river Nemunas. The weather was pretty warm and there was no snow on the ground, so it felt more like an autumn run and not a winter one.

Only around 30 people came dressed up as Santas and I was one of them. I wore the same Santa suit as in the Christmas Run of Aberdeen. The total number of participants was around 650.

All the runners received a diploma and a goodie bag full of adverts. We also could snack on Christmas cookies (these ones) and warm ourselves with a cup of tea after the run.

I had a great afternoon and was surprised with the time I’ve managed to finish the distance in. I have no idea what will be the next running event for me. I’m going back to Aberdeen in January and I will probably stay there until June, so I won’t be able to participate in Kaunas Half-Marathon, which usually takes place in April. However, I hope that I will be able to find some running events in Aberdeen, UK.

Christmas Run: Aberdeen Santa Run 2015

Welcome to another post about a running event! My last post on running was published  back in September, when I participated in the Night Run just before I left Lithuania, and you can find it here. Since then, I have literally been jogging only 3-5 times, so I wasn’t in my best shape for this run. Nevertheless, I had a great time and I want to share my experiences with you!

Aberdeen Santa Run 2015 was an annual charity run organized by WildHearts charity. This was obviously my first Santa Run in Aberdeen (since I’ve only moved there 4 months ago) as well as my very first Christmas Run in general (although, I think I will participate in a Christmas-y Run in my hometown of Kaunas when I get back to Lithuania for a Christmas break). Speaking about Santa Run in Aberdeen: all the proceeds from this event went to the aforementioned WildHearts charity and will help to fund various projects that this charity undertakes. Next weekend, a different WildHearts Santa Run will take place in the nearby town of Inverness, so, if you are in the area, I highly suggest that you participate! It’s not only a fun afternoon activity but a great charity event for an amazing cause!

I, personally, found out about Aberdeen Santa Run through Facebook and instantly decided to register. The standard payment for the run/donation was 15£. For this price, upon arrival, all the participants received a full, one-size-fits-all type of Santa Suit (trousers, jacket, hat, beard and  belt, which I have lost while running) and a number card. After the run, all the runners received a commemorative medal, a goodie bag with snacks (caramel bar, coconut chips, yogurt raisins and shortbread cookie) and a bottle of water. The youngsters could participate for a cheaper price -10£- they received a special event T-Shirt, a hat, and a number.

The run started outside the Pittodrie Stadium and the route ran  by the beach and the seafront. Throughout the whole run, I could  see the North Sea, so, from my running experience, this was definitely the run with the prettiest view. Having said that, running by the sea was not easy because of the harsh wind! However, the sun was shining the whole time and there were zero clouds in the sky, so it was a nicely balanced weather.

The organization for the event was really good, except for one mishap with the first turn in the route. All the runners (725 runners participated in the run) divided themselves into two groups and took two different paths, however, we managed to join back into one crowd fairly quickly. The whole mass of runners was also accompanied by a group of men in Santa costumes on motorbikes – that was an amazing spectacle as well.

I was quite happy with the time that I’ve managed to finish the distance in. This event wasn’t meant to be a serious competition. It was just a super fun Sunday afternoon, doing something good both for one’s own health and a bigger cause. It also helped me to get into a Christmas Spirit.

Kaunas Marathon 2015

A few weeks ago, I’ve participated in the last ‘big’ running event – Kaunas Marathon 2015. This was the 3rd annual marathon of my city and I had run in all of them. Blog post about the 2014 marathon here.

The weather was terrible for running. The sun was shining from the early morning and the temperature was around 27 to 30 degrees Celsius (80 to 86 Fahrenheit). There was also some wind and, for the love of God, that wind was warm. I have never run in such a terrible conditions. I really do prefer running in the cold air or even in the rain.

The route chosen for the competition wasn’t great as well. The athletes had to run the majority of the distance in the Old Town of Kaunas where the streets are made from stones. The track also had way too many sharp corners.

I’ve chosen the 5 km distance and surprisingly – still managed to reach the finish line faster than ever before this season. However, I felt really poorly afterwards – my stomach was done with running in a dessert like environment.

Despite the awful weather, uncomfortable route and the overall terrible state of health, I still had a good time. The start and finish of the race was in the main squire of Kaunas. The old buildings and crowds of runners made for weird but simultaneously awesome mash-up.

This was also the biggest Kaunas Marathon ever with around 5000 people participating. There was, of course, marathon and half marathon distances to choose from as well as 5 km and 10 km shorter routes. Families could participate in 1.4 km family run while there was also 0.7 km charity run to raise money for premature babies.
