Movie review: Unbroken

Movie reviews

Hi!
On Monday, I went to the cinema to watch Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. I have seen several films depicting World War II events from different angles (Schindler’s list, Fury, Inglorious Basterds, Pearl Harbor, Forest of Gods and The Imitation Game) and now Unbroken joins this list.

In short I would describe the film as a mixture of Life of Pi and Fury with a pinch of Forest of Gods and topped of with Edge of Tomorrow.

Unbroken isn’t Angelina’s directorial debut – it’s her 2nd time being behind the camera. The film tells a story of Louis Zamperini – an Olympic athlete who spent the 2nd World War in a prisoner of war camp in Japan after surviving 47 days of a raft in the middle of the ocean. It’s based on a book by Laura Hillenbrand as well as real life events. Sadly, the real Louis Zamperini died in spring of 2014 and didn’t get to see his life on the big screen.

Acting

Louis Zamperini is portrayed by Jack O’Connell – a British actor who is best known for his work on the TV show Skins. I liked his performance, it was so-so at the beginning of the movie but in the end, when Jack really got into the character, it was just amazing. The emotional dual between him and the Bird truly showed his talent and made me enjoy the scene which was actually horrible and heartbreaking but inspiring at the same time. I would love to see more of his work.

Speaking about the Bird – a Japanese general who tortured Louis both mentally and physically – he was played by a Japanese singer Miyavi. The character seemed a bit cartoon-y to me – almost like a stupid school bully. Nonetheless, I hated the character almost as much as Christoph Waltz’s Hans Landa in the Inglorious Basterds, so Miyavi did a great job as a villain.

Other cast members included : Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Finn Wittrock, Jai Courtney, Luke Treadaway, Jordan Patrick Smith and many others. As you can already tell, this is an all male cast type of movie. I don’t have any problems with that because there were no women at war. However, I do have a problem with the fact that I can’t remember anything about the characters that these actors played with the exceptions of Jack O’Connel and Miyavi. They didn’t develop them well enough and didn’t make me care about them or even remember them at all.

Visuals and Directing

The movie is beautifully shot and I really liked Angelina’s work as a director. The scenes in the water were cool but sometimes cheesy while prisoner of war camp was portrayed realistically.

Sport

Louis Zamperini was an Olympic runner and for me as an athlete, the part which told us about his athletic career was the most interesting. I also loved the fact that they didn’t diminish the importance of sport in Louis Zamperini’s life. If he hadn’t been an athlete and hadn’t trained as hard as he did, he probably wouldn’t have survived the war. I loved the clip of the real Louis running with the Olympic torch in 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan.

Religion

Louis Zamperini also was a religious person, who found God when he needed him the most. Religion’s theme was mentioned in the film but didn’t explored deeply enough. The end of the film was really touching and made me tear up. It showed the importance of forgiveness – sometimes it’s better to turn the other cheek than to raise a fist.

Criticisms

Unbroken received mixed reviews from the critics and was shut down from the award’s season. Overall, I liked the film, though, a few scenes were really unbelievable and took me out of the movie. For example, their fight with a shark – you can’t catch a shark with your bare hands. The pacing had a few problems, but I would still recommend to watch this movie if you are a sport’s fan and interested in history.

Movie review: The Giver + book

Movie reviews

Hello!

The Giver movie has finally opened in my country, so this is going to be my review!

From unknown Australian TV director Phillip Noyce comes The Giver – a childrens’ book by Lois Lowry adaptation to the big screen.

Summary:

Lowry’s book The Giver was released in 1993 (It took 21 years to make a movie out of this book!) followed by Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004) and Son (2012). Currently, I am reading the 3rd book and I am enjoying this series, it raises a lot of questions to me and shows what happens to people who forget what is important in life.

Book to movie changes

The beginning of the movie seemed a bit rushed, they flew through the bigger part of the book in the first 20-30 minutes, so it was natural that they needed to make some stuff up and plus, they had only less than a 100 pages of the book material left. Basically, in my opinion, the book hadn’t had much action or a clear direction where it was going, to what final piece it was building up to. So, while adapting this sort of slow but thought provoking story into an action flick, they just cleared some things and organized the plot. They also upgraded the setting into a much more modern world which is more appealing to today’s viewers. I was really happy that they included more character development and focused a bit more on other characters instead of focusing just on Thomas. Of course, they added some romance, which is a must for a dystopian YA movie, as well. The last big change – picking a clear antagonist: The Chief Elder played by Meryl Streep.

Acting

Streep was amazing as usual. I also enjoyed other big movie stars like Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes and Jeff Bridges in their pay-check roles. Newcomers Odey Rush and Cameron Monaghan also did a nice job. Cameo form Taylor Swift was good but not too memorable. Rising star Brenton Thwaites, which is going to be in 2 more movie this year (Ride and Son of a Gun) and who was also in Maleficient as Prince Phillip and in The Signal (small budget, independent Sci-Fi thriller), did really good job in his role. I also liked how Brenton’s character Jonas spent the bigger part of the movie with a baby and showed that staying with a kids is not just woman’s work.

Visuals

Now, speaking about the visuals, I loved the transition from black and white to color and I believe that it worked perfectly with the story. All the different shots of the memories seemed a bit chaotic but nice  as well.

All in all, I enjoyed the movie and didn’t mind the changes because all the main plot points stayed the same and some dialogue lines were straight from the book. The film was touching, cute, pleasant but not too complicated. They portrayed human emotions believably, restored my faith in humanity and made me want to be alive and experience everything – even if just for a moment.

Nails: TFIOS design

Beauty&Fashion

Hello!
The hottest thing right now in pop culture is the movie The Fault In Our Stars. As I am a huge fan of this story (John Green is a genius for writing such an exquisite book), I have decided to try my hand at nail art inspired by TFIOS..
This is a super simple, minimalistic design for those who don’t have any tools for nails and don’t want to spend a lot of time on them. Shall we begin?

First of all you will need a blue nail polish. Try to find yourself a blue color that resembles the color of TFIOS book cover. I used Maybelline New York nail polish COLORAMA in 651. Then get yourself a few toothpicks for painting. The last thing – black and white nail polish. Mine are both form a brand called Buk. I think they are only sold where I live. For finishing touches you will need a topcoat and some nail polish remover to clean around your nails if you are as messy as me.

Instructions:
1.Paint all you nails with blue color. Let them dry completely – this is important because when you try to paint something on them, you will just smudge everything into one color if their are not dry.
2. Pick a nail you will paint your cloud symbols on. I chose my left hand’s index finger.
3. Start by slowly painting the outline of the white cloud at the bottom of you nail with a toothpick. When you feel happy with the outline, color the inside of it and let it dry.
4. Get another clean toothpick a paint a black outline of the cloud at the top of your nail. Remember: the clouds have to touch (the black one is slightly covering the top of the white one).
5. Let the clouds dry completely and put on a topcoat.
6. The next thing you might do is pick another finger: I chose my right hand’s thumb. Here I painted a little question mark to resemble the Okay? question. If you want to do that, paint it by using a toothpick and a black polish. Let it dry completely and put on a topcoat.
7. This is where I stopped, because I like to have some nails that are plain, just colored with one color. But you don’t have to follow me. If you are more advanced than I am in nail art, I suggest you paint more clouds with Okay? Okay. written on them or a cigarette to recall Gus metaphor, an infinity sign, TFIOS abbreviation or something else that reminds you of the beautiful story of Hazel and Augustus. When, don’t forget to paint a layer of topcoat and by using an ear pick clean the outsides of you nail. The product is finished:)

I hope you liked this kinda different post about nails. I hope it has been helpful. Bye:)

Kaunas running marathon + Sunday reunion

Sports

Good day everybody!

Yesterday (on Sunday) I participated in one of the last running marathons this summer – 2nd annual Kaunas Marathon. Like last year, I’ve chose 10 km distance and did my best time yet -1 hour 5 minutes. The total number of runners was 3000, but 10 km distance was the most popular between them – about 800 people ran it. The weather for running was perfect – not too hot, not to cold, no sunshine as well as no rain, just a bit of wind, which really helped to cool down in some parts of the distance. The only flaw for the whole marathon would be the route that had been chosen for us to run. It was to narrow for that big amount of people, so I have been running at least 6 km in a huge crowd, bumping shoulders with other runners. When, I finished the distance I got a commemorative medal, which you can see down bellow. My number was also really nice – 2424. I will run my next marathon, probably, just at the end of September. My summers are usually dedicated to swimming marathons ,so I am going to do blog posts about them. (The first one is this Sunday – June 22nd). Fun fact – as I am running for my local bakery team, after the marathon they surprised us with a delicious gift: cake and a lot of mini doughnuts and cupcakes. So, my running team had an impromptu picnic on asphalt in the middle of the huge crowd of people.

After this sports event, I went to my previous swimming couches house where we had a little reunion. Me and a bunch of my childhood friends from my previous swim team met there, cooked dinner and ate together as a family, then had some friendly competition in a round of Twister and other board games. Also, we baked super easy cookies using cornflakes and condensed milk, watched FIFA World Cup, went through old photos and laughed our assets off. When we got tired of laughing and being gymnasts on Twister, we cuddled our swimming couches cats and just had a nice conversation about good old times. I still see a lot of my old swimming team everyday, because we still swim together, but couple of them have already said goodbye to this sport so it was nice to see them.

After this relaxed evening , me and one of my friends went back to my house and had a nice girly sleepover. We watched a movie (LOL with Miley Cyrus and Douglas Booth – such a great story) and then talked till 3 am in the morning. And I had to get up at 7 am to go to morning training. Yeah, summer…

I hope you enjoyed this post about running marathon which kinda turned in to a day in life post. Bye.!

Movie review: Noah

Movie reviews

As you might know if you read my blog, me and my dad usually spend our father-daughter time at a movie theater. Last time it was my dad’s turn to choose a movie, so he picked Need for Speed (You can find its review on this blog).  This time I got to choose a movie so, I went for Noah – epic-biblically inspired movie based on myth of Noah – savior of humans. I didn’t choose this film because I am religious or something like that, but because of 3 reason that have names: Douglas Booth, Logan Lerman and Emma Watson. I have loved these actors since I first saw them in big movies.  Emma Watson is always going to be stuck in my mind as Hermione from HP but I was amazed by her performance in a The Bling Ring as well. (review coming soon).  Logan Lerman is perfect Percy Jackson but the first film I have seen him in was The Perks of being a Wallflower – a movie which, I believe, every teenager should watch. Speaking about Douglas Booth, LOL is still one of my favorite movies ever (I liked his chemistry with old Miley Cyrus) and I have watched his last movie – latest adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with Hailee Steinfield. So, with a mind set of “I just want to see my favorite actors” I didn’t really know what to expect from this movie. I was really surprised that director Darren Aronofsky (he did Black Swan back in 2010) picked this story to adapt into a motion picture. I mean, how can you show something that has happened before the recorded history? If you make something up, it becomes a fantasy movie, but you can’t make biblical stories into fantasy movie? Or can you? If I was confused before watching the movie, I am surely got even more confused after it. Maybe it is good to watch movies like that. It makes you think about stuff and really inspires you to dig deep and to look for answers. It was the same for me with the epic Cloud Atlas by The Wachowskis. I still think about it sometimes. But back to Noah. Film tells a story of the descendant of Seth (Seth was one of three sons that Eve and Adam had. When Cain killed Abel, Seth descendants became good people and Cain’s – bad ones.) Noah (played by Russel Crowe) was chosen by the Creator (God’s name is never spoken) to save the animals because they are innocent and to help kill all the people because they destroyed The Earth and turned their backs to the Creator. The main antagonist is played by Ray Winstone, his character name is Tubal-cain. The movie raised a question for me: what makes humans real humans? What is humanity really about? Is it an ability to forgive or ability to be just? When watching a movie I thought that Noah was just stupid for believing someone who may not even exist and for preparing to do some stuff that were not humanly at all. (Sorry if you didn’t understand what I meant by this, but if I explained it more I would have spoiled the entire movie.) I liked the performance of all actors; I believe they were chosen wisely.  However, one of the drawbacks of the movie was these really awkward situations. For example, all people should be vegetarians to be good, Noah is the first drunkard in the world. And finally, that massive rainbow at the end didn’t do any good as well. I would rate this movie 3.5/5. My dad really liked it and we had a very heated conversation about it in the car on a drive home. It is definitely not a movie to watch when you are lazy, but a serious film about humanity problems. I have read that the director said that this was the least biblical interpretation of a biblical story; so maybe, you need to watch it with a different mindset and expectations than those I had. If you give this movie a try and you get confused as I did, leave me a comment down bellow so we could discuss it. We might find answers then:) TRAILER:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qmj5mhDwJQ Image Image Twitter: https://twitter.com/LunaTheia Instagram : http://instagram.com/luknexx Tumblr: http://luna-theia.tumblr.com/

Top 6 Favorite Youtubers!!

Uncategorized

This week I am going to tell you all about my favorite youtubers. I was planning to do Top 5, but I just couldn’t leave out one of them, so therefore, it is Top 6. I believe that this list will appeal to everybody’s taste, because here we have some nerd stuff, some fashion, lifestyle, adventures and some cooking. (I have a serious sweet tooth problem). Enjoy!

1. FASHION and BEAUTY. There are a lot of great Beauty Gurus on youtube like Tanya Burr, MissGlamorazzi, but my favorite one is Zoe Sugg known as Zoella . She is British vlogger and beauty guru currently living in Brighton. She also has a blog www.zoella.co.uk . I love her quirky and girly personality as well as the way she communicates with her fans. She radiates positive energy towards everybody. I love her style too – girly dresses, shirts with collars ( I can die for a great collar shirt), slouchy jumpers and disco pants. Her hairstyles are also very cute – simple but always polished. Messy buns, halo or fish tale braids are my favorite. On her channel https://www.youtube.com/user/zoella280390 you will find cosmetics’ and clothes’ hauls, DIY videos, “How to” and “favorite things” videos and also little insights into her personal life with Q&As and variety of challenges. Not a long time ago she hit 4 million subscribers and this number is growing everyday.

2.ADVENTURE – when I need some adrenaline the channel I turn to is FunForLouis run by Louis Cole from Great Britain. His daily vlogs show world through his eyes. He has already traveled to every content I think, but right now he is in the USA relaxing after PlaylistLive convention and road trip through out the country. His signature style is dreadlocks, colorful penny boards and a vest t-shirts. I love different intros he does every time and the same line he says at the end of the video : “Peace out, enjoy life and live the adventure. Buuum!”. I believe that this is a great motto for life. He has around 640 thousand subscribers but he deserves a lot more so check him out.: https://www.youtube.com/user/FunForLouis

3. LIFESTYLE – my favorite gay on the whole Internet is Tyler Oakley. He is the person you want to be friends with. His sassy personality, strong opinion and immeasurable love for his people makes him the best there is. His channel is full of everything: challenges, Q&As, fangirling videos, collabs (drunk collabs included) as well as videos addressing important issues (e.g. health care). His always changing hair color never disappoints or bores. Fans love to ship him with other youtubers, but the pair they worship is Troyler (Tyler Oakley + Troye Sivan – fellow South African/Australian youtuber). Tyler’s positive view to life is infectious. The amount of fans he has grows everyday, so become one and SLAY ( I mean join) him here: https://www.youtube.com/user/tyleroakley

4. COOKING – my favorite chef on the Internet is Australian home cook – Ann Reardon form “How too cook that”. On this channel she shows us how to make chocolates desserts and decorations, various theme cakes (Divergent cake, One Direction cake) and other desserts (Facebook dessert, Twitter and Instagram dessert). Her work on youtube led to the creation of her own “Surprise Cakes” app which is really fun for kids and adults likewise to use. Her step by step tutorials while using tools found at hand make everything seem easy and accomplish-able. But be careful – do not eat to much sweets. However, that is a very hard thing to do, when every Friday you find a new indulgent recipe that makes your mouth water. Her half a million subscribers are waiting for you to join right here: https://www.youtube.com/user/howtocookthat

5. NERD – One of my favorite nerd type channels is Emergency Awesome run by Charlie . Here you can find videos about Game of Thrones,Walking Dead,Arrow, Doctor Who and other both fantasy TV series and movies. I really like they way his video are styled. One day you get the review of the episode, the next day Q&A about the review. Here you can get deeper insight into fantasy world. Help to get him to 200 000 subsribers : https://www.youtube.com/user/emergencyawesome

6. NERD – the last channel I want to present is comicbookgilr19 https://www.youtube.com/user/comicbookgirl19 . Her reviews, top lists and other videos make watching TV series and movies even more interesting than it already is. Pre-histories of fantasy worlds, character videos or explanations, “changes from book to a movie” type of videos can all be found on her channel. What I like most about her, is that she is not afraid to be herself and to stand for what she beliefs in : recently she attend SeaWorld protest that want to free sea creatures which are held in captivity.

That’s all for today. I hope you enjoyed this list of my favorite youtubers. Find me on different social media sites :
