Movie review: Avengers 2 Age of Ultron

Movie reviews

Hello!

How are doing? Excited for the weekend? Do you have any plans? Well, if you don’t, then I have a suggestion for you – GO SEE THE AVENGERS!

As you can probably tell from my excitement, I’ve already seen it. It officially opens today (on May 1st), but I attended the early screening which was held on Thursday (April 30th).

I’ve waited for this movie for 3 years and was overly excited to see it. And it definitely didn’t disappoint – I had a huge smile on my face during the whole run-time of the film and eyes open as wide as possible.

I think that this movie doesn’t need a summary so let’s just jump into the review. I should also give you a SPOILER warning here. I will try to keep the biggest spoilers out of the review but I really want to talk about the ending, so be aware of it. I suggest you go see it and then get back to this post.

To begin with, I want to talk about the action. Every year, the film industry pushes the boundaries of CGI and computer graphics and this film was no exception. The fight scenes were amazing, the visuals – breathtaking and the Ultron…he looked like the coolest robot you will ever meet. Vision was also a phenomenon but I will talk more about him later.

The script of the film was also amazing: the character development and the witty dialogue were the driving forces of the film rather than the action pieces. Joss Whedon is a genius and I love his sense of humor. I laughed out loud multiple times…especially during the jokes which involved Thor’s hammer or Cap’s “LANGUAGE!”.

Character by character

RDJ, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth were really great in the film but I want to talk about the newbies first and also about the characters which, sadly, do not have their own franchises.

I loved Brutasha, I hope it can continue. Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) back story was shocking but believable…Mark Rufallo’s Hulk’s issues were also realistic and fitting with the whole “the past will haunt you” feeling.

Speaking about Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) – I was always on Hawkeye’s side (I shoot arrows in my free time) and I love the fact that they brought him to the front of the pack. His plot-line’s twist was also really nice.

The newbies: Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. I really loved both of them: the X-MEN Quicksilver was cool but he had only one scene while MCU Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) actually contributed to a bunch of scenes. However, I am not happy with where his character is going but I can see the creators’ reasons behind that…(legal issues and over-crowded-ness are my two guesses). Elizabeth Olsen was great Scarlet Witch, her hand movements were mesmerizing, I can’t wait to see more of her! Because of her powers, we got glimpses of the memories and dreams of the Avengers and that resulted in a plethora of great cameos! Moreover, they accents didn’t bother me! They sounded pretty natural, not perfect but okay. (I’m also from Eastern/Northern Europe but don’t have any acccent because, all my life, I heard only American and British films and TV series, YT videos, etc.).

Ultron (James Spader) – he is the best villain of the Marvel Universe to date. (Even better than Loki, then again – Loki is more like an antagonist and not a straight up villain by now). Ultron is cruel and funny and surprisingly human-like even though he is a robot.

The Vision (Paul Bettany) – that’s now my favorite character of the MCU (move over, Captain America). I love the way he was created: he is half human, half robot, half AI and half God (he has the mind stone soo…). Plus, I was afraid that the Vision and JARVIS would be the same character but they were two distinct human-beings…well, I guess not human but beings.

Lastly, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Nick Fury (Samuel L.Jackson) showed up but we were expecting them. I would love it if both of them appeared more often on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because in the movies their will always be upstaged by the Avengers and in the TV series they could be the leaders of the pack.

Themes

Age of Ultron touched upon themes like the power of humanity and the level of human error and had a really interesting outlook on war and what it means to be a savior. It underlined the importance of team work as well. By now, almost all of us know what will happen in Civil War, so it will be really hearth breaking to see how the team is divided and how friendships are shattered.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

I love how they were able to bring so many characters in and tie up all the movies into this one. Although, they could have brought a few other females…(Iron Man vs. Thor dialogue). I also really love their usage of the Infinity Stones in this film. Previously, I thought that they were not working as this big plot device that is pushing all the MCU forward but now everything seems in sync.

Infinity stones used so far:

  • Space Stone – Tesseract.
  • Mind or Soul Stone – Loki’s Scepter.
  • Aether – seen in Thor 2.
  • Power stone – Orb – Guardians of the Galaxy

In comics there are stones for Mind, Soul, Power, Space, Time and Reality. We are definitely missing the Time gem so far and either Mind or Soul one (depends on which one was in Loki’s scepter and now on Vision’s head). I guess that means that Aether is the Reality stone? I could believe that.

SPOILER WARNING – going to talk about the ending and the end-credits.

So, at the end of the film we got a new line-up of the Avengers. I will definitely miss the old team but I believe that this is not the end for them. Now, let’s talk about Cap’s 3rd film – Civil War. I wasn’t planing on calling it Avengers 2.5 but I think that I will need to because it will have so many characters!

We surely know that Captain America, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, The Vision, Falcon and War Machine are going to be in it. We all also know that Iron Man will be in it. Jeremy Renner also recently said that he will be filming some stuff for the Civil War. The only 2 characters which I think won’t show up are Thor (because he has his own movie and it looked like he went back to Asgard to figure out what is happening there) and Hulk (the ending was really unclear, so I don’t really have any predictions on what is going to happen but I really hope that he will be back – I loved the science bros). And Spider-Man – he will be there as well because Sony and Marvel made a deal. Dam, I thought that Age of Ultron was a bad-ass team up but Civil War will be on the same level or even more awesome.

And don’t even get me started on what will happen in the Infinity War…If we add all the old Avengers + the new line-up + the Guardians + the new characters which will be introduced till 2018 (Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and the Inhumans (some of them might only be in part 2)), we will get something epic and spectacular! Don’t forget, we also have the TV characters and the Netflix characters! That would mean that at least 30 characters are needed to battle Thanos who will finally do some work himself ! Avengers 3 mega team up would make my brain explode! But we have to wait until 2018 to get it.

But don’t worry, we still have plenty of cool movies to keep us waiting till then. Ant-Man comes out on July 31st (1 day before my 18th birthday!! Interesting fact – Guardians came out on my birthday last year) and Captain America Civil War will be in theaters in 1 year and 5 days – it premieres on May 6th, 2016!!

So, assemble your friends, family and pets and go watch it! You definitely won’t regret it!

Enrique Iglesias: Sex and Love Tour 2014 in Lithuania, Kaunas

Music

Hello!

Sorry for not posting for a few weeks. I was extremely busy with the preparations for the IELTS exam and, frankly, I didn’t have any interesting stuff to blog about. I didn’t want to publish posts which I wasn’t 100% behind.

Anyway, on Tuesday, December 2nd I went to Enrique Iglesias concert! I didn’t plan to attend it, however, a few weeks back I had my friend over and we were watching MTV all night and Enrique’s songs would come up constantly, so, after this, I decided that I needed to be at that show! I had been a huge fan of Iglesias when I was like 9 to 13 years old. Tired of Being Sorry was my jam and go-to song for a couple of years . I was really pleased when he performed it live. We also listened to hits like Hero, Escape, Taking Back My Love, Bailamos and new songs from his 10th studio album Sex and Love.

The show was really amazing, although, Enrique was late for hour and a half. But the songs and the energy he put into the performance exceeded my expectations! He communicated with fans, asked to sing with him, invited one lucky guy from the audience to join him on stage and even jumped into the crowd! I had a great time and even saw him from a 1 meter distance. In order to get a spot that close to the stage, I had to spend 3 hours waiting in line. But it’s not the first time that I queue in line for hours to be in the front, so I have gotten used to it.

Overall, I hope that Enrique will be back soon because I would really like to see him in concert once again. He visited Lithuania for the first time in 2007 and this was his second time performing in my country. He also uploaded a photo from that night’s show with the caption: best show of the tour so far!! Both he and 1R think that LT crowds are wild, loving and grateful! I have bought a poster as usually and commemorated this event on my bedroom wall.
What concerts have you attended recently!? Bye!!

Bellow you will find a few photos that I’ve taken.

Movie review: Guardians of the Galaxy

Movie reviews

Hi!

As you may know, I am a huge Marvel fan. I read Marvel comics, watch Marvel TV shows and one shots, can’t wait for Netflix series but most importantly I love Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies (However, I also watched old Marvel movies like Daredevil and Blade). So, I was beyond excited to finally see Guardians of the Galaxy – the funniest, wittiest and quirkiest Marvel movie to date.

Guardians is the 10th installment in MCU. Short reminder of the MCU lineup: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor 1, Captain America 1, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians, Avengers 2, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain America 3

Summary:  After stealing a mysterious orb in the far reaches of outer space, Peter Quill, a half human/half alien is now the main target of a manhunt led by the villain known as Ronan the Accuser. To help fight Ronan and his team and save the galaxy from his power, Quill creates a team known as the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ to save the world.

I loved everything about this movie starting with the characters and ending with the soundtrack. It actually might be my favorite Marvel movie to date. My favorite character, of course, was Rocket Raccoon but Chris Pratt’s Star Lord was also a great leading man. Groot was so adorable, especially at the end when he was dancing. Zoe Saldana as Gamora was also amazing; I enjoyed her fight with Nebula. The only character that I wish they have worked more on was Drax. The villain (Ronan) was okay, he is not the next Loki, but pretty good. I wish we would have seen more Thanos but I guess they are saving him for Phase 3.

The storyline was also really cool, I like the fact that we got back to Infinity gems/stones storyline like in Thor 2, Avengers. If you want to know more about these gems I suggest you read Thanos Quest comic books by Jim Starlim, Ron Lim, John Beatty, and Tom Vincent. The whole story is super short (2 issues) but it gives you more information on what these gems can do and why Thanos is doing what he is doing.

Finally, we have to mention the soundtrack of this film – it was superb. You wanted to dance all the time. I went to this film on an opening night and the cinema was full of die hard Marvel fans and all of us were singing Hooked on a Feeling when it came up on screen.

Comedy was wonderful as well. I laughed more than I would laugh in a comedy movie. I also give huge props to Marvel for going in this easier, lighter, funnier direction. Another Marvel movie we got this year – Captain America 2 –was completely different, dark, moody, and serious. And this one was like a breath of fresh year after such a dark period of Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.

About 50 people from 300 stayed through the end credits and we were rewarded and finally got to see the character we have been waiting for a long time. I liked the post credit scene but I am not sure if it was just an Eater egg for fans or if they actually are going to do it. I wish they would have showed that Avengers 2 comic con trailer after this movie.

The next film in Marvel phase is Avengers Age of Ultron . Sadly, Guardians won’t be in it but don’t be sad – a sequel has already been announced and is scheduled to be released on July 28, 2017 as a part of Phase 3. Director James Gunn will return so the tone of the movie will be the same.

Movie review: X-MEN Days of Future Past + a look back to the whole franchise

Movie reviews

Hello my dear readers!

These past few months I have been loving everything Marvel. I watched all the Cinematic Universe movies, all season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a few days time and even started watching some old movies inspired by comics (Blade, Daredevil , Elektra). In addition, I also tried reading a few comic books and I have to admit – I did not think I would enjoy them that much.

Because I was done with the Avengers team I decided to move on to the X-men. Although, I have heard a lot of negative comments from comic book readers that these movies did not do justice to the real, colorful X-men from the original material, I wanted to see them for myself.

I started with 2000 X-MEN. That was a super solid film that didn’t slow down at all. It was a promising start to a movie franchise. However, I hated Rogue’s character. For God’s sake, she is a mutant and she couldn’t even defend herself, she was like a huge baby, always crying and whining. Also, I watched this movie 14 years after it came out and I got to say – Hugh Jackman didn’t change a bit. Favorite heroes: Storm and Cyclops. Favorite villain: Mystique. 4.5/5

2003 meant the arrival of one thing – X2: X-MEN united. I really enjoyed the overall movie, but it was a bit to complex and overcrowded with storylines. I mean, we had like 9 plotlines if not more: Iceman’s family problems, Stryker’s plans, Government’s plan, Kurt Wagner’s story (I loved that character – so funny), Wolverine’s past, Pyro’s problem, Rogue and Iceman’s love problem, Jean’s, Wolverine’s and Cyclops’ love triangle and that Cerebro stuff once again. We could have reduced that list by half and it would have made for an amazing movie. One last thing – I loved the fact that Mystique and Magneto may seem like good people/mutants, but truly, they are evil to the bone. Favorite character: Iceman. 4/5

In 2006 came the X-MEN the Last Stand. This movie was a huge disappointment, not because it left a lot of mistakes in an overall storyline (I will talk about it more in a second), but because the story of the movie was not interesting enough. Of course, I enjoyed Jean’s transformation, because she wasn’t an interesting character before. But how can you ‘cure’ Magneto and Mystique (Mutation is not a disease) and kill off Cyclops and Professor X in the same movie?  Only thing I enjoyed was Iceman&Kitty. I like that couple much more than I like Iceman&Rogue. 2/5

3 years went by and the first spinoff came out – X-MEN Origins: Wolverine. I don’t have anything much to say about this movie, it was okay. Good acting, weak story. Favorite character: Gambit played by Taylor Kitsch.3/5

And know let’s talk about the movie that messed everything up: X-MEN First class(2011). I would have really enjoyed that story if it weren’t for those mistakes. Nothing added up. It might have worked as a separate movie, but not so much as a prequel to the whole franchise. (You can find a list of mistakes here: http://io9.com/5966264/8-ways-x-men-movie-continuity-is-irretrievably-fucked ) The only thing that I adored about FC was the fact that we got to see the young Xavier. He was pretty wild young adult. I never would have guessed that he would grow into such wise elder. 4/5

In 2013 X-men origins: Wolverine got a sequel – The Wolverine. I liked where the story was set: we finally moved from North America to somewhere else, in this case – to Japan.  What is more, I feel really sorry for Wolverine and his fear of flying. However, I would like to see other X-man in a spot line instead of Wolverine. Separate Mystique’s, Storm’s or Cyclops’ movie anyone? Rate 3.5/5

Note: I have written all these small reviews before watching the new X-men movie. Bellow you will find review of it and the overall conclusion of the post.

X-MEN. Days of Future Past. I went to this movie with low expectations despite having heard a lot of nice things about the film. I was surprised as hell. The movie delivered. I actually feel confident enough to say that this is one my favorite movies from now on.

Reasons why I loved DOFP:
1. First of all, it had a huge ensemble cast: both members from the old team (First class) and a new one.
2. The story was unpredictable and for the last hour of the movie I did not know how they were going to fix things because everything was just messed up.
3. I really enjoyed the new character Quicksilver. He was a fun loving mutant who enjoyed using his powers. I cannot wait to see how Marvel will interpret this character in the Avengers 2.
4. Magneto once again was a villain in this movie. Young Magneto played by Michael Fassbender is one of two of my favorite evil characters (Another is Loki). The main reason why I enjoy both these characters so much is the fact that they have some good qualities and they are not just straight up evil.
5. Another character who brought joy to my face was young Xavier played by James McAvoy. We got a chance to connect to this character even more than in the First Class. We got to see him at his lowest point in life and to follow him on his journey to redemption.
6. Peter Dinklage was also amazing as Bolivar Trask. I just adore everything this actor does after falling in love with his performance on Game of Thrones.
7.One of my favorite scenes – young Xavier’s and old Xavier’s conversation. So powerful and so heartbreaking. (“The world needs you to hope”).
8. And finally, the last thing that made this movie so amazing is the fact that they FIXED ALL THE MISTAKES OF THE PREVIOUS MOVIES. As of today, the first 3 movies as well as both Wolverine spin offs never happened. Let me explain. The First Class was set in the 1960s (it still happened), then follows the Days of Future Past in 1973 and that is it. Everything from now on is changed because of the events in the past. I have read some articles that first two movies of the original trilogy might still have happened, but I don’t believe it. They both are set in the 2000s as well as the tragedy of the Last Stand and The Wolverine. Origins movie was set in 1975-1981, so it also didn’t happened.
Rate 5/5 (without a doubt).

All in all, I would like to say just this. Bryan Singer, the director of X-MEN,X2 and Days of Future Past is the only one who knows how to do a great X-MEN movie. Days of Future Past is by far the best movie in the franchise and it got me really pumped for the further sequels. X-MEN Apocalypse is set to be released in 2016 (May 27th). We got a teaser for it in the post-credit scene.
