Hello!
Welcome to a new series of posts (or it might never turn into a series). For the past 2 years, I have only been writing movie reviews after I have actually seen the film(s). However, I have decided to try my hand at writing a preview for the film. In the preview posts, I will attempt to share my thoughts and expectations. The reason why I chose The Force Awakens as the first film to write a preview on is the fact that never before have I seen so many people being hyped about a movie. The Internet has been blowing up since they announced that they were making an Episode VII and all the trailers and the official merchandise have only increased the hype.
I have also chosen to write a preview for The Force Awakens because, for the past half a year, I have been asking myself whether I should even review this movie, so I hope that getting my thoughts down on paper (or on a computer screen) will help me to decide what to do. I had my reasons for not wanting to review Episode VII. First being the fact that I have only watched the previous Stars Wars films only less than a month ago. I wasn’t even born when the originals came out and the prequels also slipped my attention. I also heard way too much bad things about the prequels on the Internet and pre-judged them in not a very nice way (saddest part is, the prequels technically were the Star Wars of my childhood).
As a fan of films, I at least should have watched the originals long ago but didn’t . One of these reasons for this might have been the fact that I have never really thought that I will be able to experience a Star Wars film in a cinema, so there was no need to actually watch the previous motion pictures before now. In addition, knowing what a huge pop culture phenomena these movies are, I was afraid that I will be overwhelmed by the lore of the whole universe and that I would feel like I always don’t know half the things and can’t understand any Easter Eggs or inner jokes.
However, around 2-3 weeks ago I sat down and watched all the films. They definitely were one of the campiest examples of science fiction (emphasized FICTION above science, while contemporary sci-fi films are all about SCIENCE above fiction). They also had an old school kind of feeling, which was really charming. I absolutely LOVED the originals. That’s the thing I was afraid of – that I will enjoy them too much and will be consumed by a new obsession. Well, it’s too late to back out now.
So, in the end, I have decided to review Star Wars The Force Awakens. I have overcome my personal anxieties and just decided to review the film as a complete newcomer. Despite the fact that I really liked the originals, my review will probably be very different from others since I do not have a long time emotional connection with Star Wars. Basically, you won’t get any nostalgia from me, but you will get an honest opinion of a newbie. I might not know all the lore and I might not have a ton of collectibles or posters, but I want my chance at experiencing Star Wars fully. And for many that means going to the premiere, wearing my newly purchased T-shirt with an original poster and then writing a long review full of rambling. So that’s what I’m going to do.
More importantly, Star Wars will probably be the biggest movie of the year (if not of this decade – I think it might have a chance of becoming the highest grossing film ever), so I would be a shitty reviewer if I skipped it. So, let the countdown begin! We only have one more week to wait! I don’t want to go to a dark place, but let’s just all send a collective prayer to God (or any other entity you believe in) that this film will be great. The Internet would not only break but literally explode if it sucked.
P.S. I have included a photo of a T-Shirt that I am wearing to a premiere. I got it from PRIMARK. It’s very baggy and loose. What are you wearing? Are you creating a costume? Share your ideas and/or pictures in the comments!
P.S.S. While aimlessly browsing through old photos, I found a few pictures of a random person in Berlin, cosplaying as Darth Vader back in 2010 or 2011. Back then, I only vaguely knew anything about Star Wars and still felt compelled to take a photo 🙂
